bloody good mix.

Bloody Mary's are a gourmet's playground for creating boozy concoctions of tomato, celery, lemon and worcestershire. There are as many great Bloody Mary recipes as there are connoisseurs of the drink itself. There are some classic versions that I have come to love over the years. While Lo and I were living in NYC we discovered the East Coast Bloody where it's all about heavy lemon and Worcestershire loaded with pulpy horseradish and cracked pepper, always tasty with a spicy pepperoncini. The Minnesota Bloody is always loaded with pickle juice and tabasco, again, not a bad way to make a Bloody whatsoever. There's the camp that believes that half V8 and half Clamato with celery salt and tabasco is where it's at. There's the BBQ and A1 lovers that load up their drinks with steak or BBQ sauce, a bit much for me.. but it's hard to go wrong with any kind of spicy tomato and vodka combo.

Our Bloody Mary recipe is all about fresh. It's easy, spicy and a crowd pleaser every time we bust it out. In fact, it's so good, we sometimes drink it without the vodka.

Our Bloody Mary

46oz can tomato juice

2 garlic cloves, roughly chopped

1 or 2 serrano peppers, seeded and juliened

1 tablespoon sri racha hot sauce

3/4 tablespoon celery salt

1 teaspoon worcestershire

1/4 of a lemon, juiced

1 tablespoon fresh basil, finely chopped

Absolut Peppar

Please wear gloves while working with fresh peppers. It'll make your life much easier. Seed and julien your serrano peppers. Reserve their white membranes to add heat later if you like. I prefer serrano flavor to that of a jalapeño, but they can easily be exchanged. Serrano peppers are small but pack a punch - try using one pepper in this recipe before using two.

Roast your peppers with the garlic under a broiler. You almost want the peppers to burn - you want that charred hot pepper flavor. When charred nicely, add roasted garlic and serrano to a blender along with the sri racha, celery salt, worcestershire, lemon juice and basil. Blend with a cup or so of tomato juice as to get a nice smooth mixture. Combine the mixture with the rest of the tomato juice and make yourself a cocktail. In a pint glass we like a 2oz pour of Absolut Peppar along with the mix.
